The final season of The Witcher is well into production, and while Netflix remains characteristically tight-lipped about details, a significant casting update has surfaced: Emily-Jo Young (Sexy Beast) will portray Shani, a fan-favorite from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and The Witcher games.
Shani will appear in the second block of filming, expected to feature in episode three or four of Season 5. Her inclusion comes as a welcome surprise for book enthusiasts, as the character was absent from earlier seasons despite being introduced in Blood of Elves. In Sapkowski’s lore, Shani begins as a medical student at Oxenfurt Academy and later serves as a field medic during the pivotal Battle of Brenna in Lady of the Lake.

The presence of Shani raises questions about how closely the final season will follow Sapkowski’s narrative. While Season 5 adapts material from Lady of the Lake, it’s unclear if viewers will witness the Battle of Brenna on screen. So far, no large-scale outdoor battle sequences have been reported. This suggests that any depiction of war may be shown from a more intimate perspective—perhaps within the chaos of a medical tent—leaving room for Netflix to focus on character-driven storytelling rather than spectacle.
Shani’s popularity soared thanks to CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher video games, especially her memorable role in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone expansion, where she became a beloved romance option. Her appearance in the series, even in a limited capacity, is a nod to the enduring impact of Sapkowski’s characters across multiple media.
Season 4 of The Witcher is currently in post-production and slated for release later in 2025. Meanwhile, Sapkowski’s new novel, Crossroads of Ravens, has been published in Poland and will launch internationally in September. CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that The Witcher 4 is now in full production, signaling a busy year for fans of the Continent.
As the series prepares to conclude, the inclusion of Shani serves as both a surprise and a gift to long-time followers—an acknowledgment of the deep lore that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
