The summer movie season is wrapping up with a bang as Weapons and Freakier Friday dominated the weekend box office, claiming the top two spots and giving theaters a welcome boost.

Warner Bros. ” Weapons”, a twisty horror from writer-director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), opened to an impressive $42.5 million. The $38 million film — about a disturbing case of missing children — stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Riding strong reviews and an “A-” CinemaScore, it’s expected to have solid staying power. Cregger’s rising profile has already landed him the Resident Evil reboot.

In second place, Disney’s Freakier Friday — a fresh spin on the 2003 body-swap hit — reunited Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as the mother-daughter duo who trade places once again. With an “A” CinemaScore and a $42 million budget, the family comedy’s $29 million debut sets it up for long-term success at the box office.

Last weekend’s champ, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, fell to third with $15.5 million in its third weekend. Despite a huge $117.6 million opening, the superhero film has seen steep drops, now at $230 million domestic and likely to finish behind DC’s Superman.

Rounding out the top five were The Bad Guys 2 with $10.4 million and The Naked Gun with $8.3 million. Elsewhere, Angel Studios launched fantasy comedy Sketch to $2.5 million.

With strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewing potential, both Weapons and Freakier Friday could help keep late-summer box office numbers sizzling.
